Petanque Secret!

Get out of the Circle!

Back to non-secret world

If you have a really bad pointing throw, stop! and get out of the cirlce. No matter how many boules you have left, get out of the circle. Walk the line that you wanted to throw and think about what happened. Go inspect the end. Shake the tension out of your arms. Consult with your teammates. Do anything but make another throw until you decide what you will do to avoid duplicating that last bad throw.

This is really important. How often have you seen someone do a bad throw, then immediately do it again? I suspect that the body tends to repeat its last motion. If the last motion is not one that works, then you will need to do something to break that cycle. Getting up out of the circle and doing anything else will help with that. Remember, you have a full minute until you need to make your next throw. Hold your breath for a minute... it is really a lot of time! Plenty of time to reprogram your body for the throw that you really wanted to make.

So, when you make a bad throw, get out of the circle and reprogram yourself for the right throw.
